What Drives the Price in Las Vegas

System size: 4- and 5-ton systems are common here, and size drives the equipment price more than anything else.
Ducts: sound existing ducts keep the job at the low end; replacing them moves it up.
Efficiency: a high-efficiency unit or heat pump costs more up front and pays back in a 110°F summer.
Timing: change-outs peak from late May through September, when contractors are busiest.
Snap the label on your outdoor unit. The estimate reads the tonnage and age off a photo of the unit’s label, so the range fits your system instead of a guess.

Before You Sign

Four permit offices cover the valley: Clark County, the City of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas. Your contractor pulls the permit; HVAC change-outs, water heaters, repipes, panel changes, solar, pools and patio covers all need one. Like-for-like shingle re-roofs and window replacements generally do not.
Nevada gives you three business days to cancel a door-to-door sale (NRS 598.230).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new air conditioner cost in Las Vegas?
$4,800 to $7,900 for a replacement system of the same size on an existing duct system, and up to about $11,600 (or $13,900 for a 5-ton system) where ductwork, a larger unit or a heat pump is involved. Las Vegas homes commonly run 4- and 5-ton systems, and desert duty cycles wear units faster than the coast does.
How many Las Vegas homes replace their AC each year?
About 14,000 a year, counting only permitted change-outs across Clark County, Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas. Most of that work is in the 1990–2009 neighborhoods: Summerlin, Centennial Hills, the northwest, Silverado Ranch, Spring Valley and Green Valley.
Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Las Vegas?
Yes, a mechanical permit, in every valley jurisdiction. Your contractor pulls it; a change-out without one can fail at resale and voids most manufacturer warranties.
When do air conditioners fail in Las Vegas?
In the first real heat, usually late May through September. Permit records show change-outs peaking in summer every year, which is also when contractors are busiest and prices firmest. A system that struggled last August is cheaper to replace in spring.
Is a heat pump worth it in Las Vegas?
Often yes. Winters are mild, so a heat pump covers heating without a gas furnace. The estimate prices a heat pump as its own system, about $9,900 to $12,900 with the existing ducts, so you can compare it with a gas furnace plus AC for your home.
